The Story

The last person who believes she was there

He said the worst thing he had ever said to anyone on a Tuesday. Ninety minutes later, she was dead.

Four days after the funeral, Nadia was sitting in the back pew of an empty church — in the red dress, exactly as furious with him as she had every right to be. He is the only person on earth who can see her. For fourteen months, that is enough.

Then a psychiatrist begins asking one question at every visit: what color is she wearing today? And the dress begins to fade.

Now there are thirty white tablets on the table and a glass of water beside them. Take them, and he is a man who finally got well. Leave them, and he is the last person alive who believes she was ever there.

But on the afternoon the car came through the intersection, something put both hands on his back and moved him two feet to the left — and no one has been able to tell him what.

Contains sudden bereavement, grief, and a character living with psychiatric illness, including his decision about treatment.
