The Story

A Gothic Mystery of Love, Forgery, and Hidden Histories

Beatrice Kwan has built her life on one gift: telling the genuine from the false. At forty-five, the rare-book expert can expose a forgery in seconds. But when the mysterious Ravenstone collection arrives, the clues lead beyond paper and ink—to hidden letters, impossible memories, and the chilling sense that another woman’s life is somehow bound to her own.

In Victorian England, Bea Grey slips into Ravenstone’s forbidden library and uncovers a secret written into its ledgers. Working beside Edmund Vale, the estate’s enigmatic heir, she finds both an intellectual equal and a dangerous temptation. In the present, every document Beatrice unseals pulls the two women closer together across time.

As forged records threaten her career and someone begins using her own methods against her, Beatrice must decide what truth is worth, what love can survive, and who has the right to write a woman’s future.

The Empress of Ink is the spellbinding first novel in the Ink & Inheritance series.

Chapter One

Opening excerpt from The Empress of Ink

The laid lines were wrong.

Not obviously wrong, not to anyone who had not spent the better part of two decades in an unreasonable personal relationship with Victorian presswork. At forty-five, Beatrice Kwan held the loupe steady over the title page and let the magnification do the arguing. The paper carried the faint ribs the mold had left, the manufacturing marks that should have been as irregular as breath. Instead, the spacing ran fractionally too even. Too mechanical. Too perfect for 1874.

She had the lie in nine seconds. What happened next jolted her from her work.

The restoration room went cold.
